If you’re having a murder mystery party, there are no doubt a number of finer points and details you need to consider, to ensure your party goes swimmingly.
Our Murder Mystery Games are all in the traditional British - style and are set around the turn of the twentieth century; therefore we will be providing a number of helpful articles to give you costume and props ideas, in-keeping with the time period.
Today, we’re going to have a look at costume and accessory ideas for female characters:
1. Feathers
Feathers were a common fashion feature in the roaring twenties, and any feather fashion accessory will instantly transport the wearer to the flapper era. Feather boas (particularly in black or white) are a very cheap and easy accessory to find in any fashion or costume hire store. In addition a feather headband was often the height of fashion. In the 1920’s the style for women was quite androgynous. Hair was straight and sleek and the bob was all the rage. It was common for women to wear a headband around the circumference of the forehead, to fix the hair in a straight and sleek style. We managed to find some wonderful flapper style feather headbands for only $5.99 at Flapper Costumes.com.
2. Fur (fake of course!)
Fur was extremely fashionable, luxurious and common-place in the first half of the twentieth century. A fake fur stole will add an immediate touch of glamour and complete any costume. You can find fake fur stoles easily online at sites like eBay. Alternatively if you are comfortable with real fur, it’s often easy to find vintage fur pieces in thrift stores.
3. Cigarette Holder
Nowadays we’re aware that smoking is anti-social and extremely bad for the health, however in the 1920’s smoking was fast becoming a fashionable - if slightly insouciant statement for the modern woman. That said, it would be terribly inelegant to be seen smoking without a cigarette holder. In order to complete your ensemble a cigarette holder works perfectly, and with the holder, there’s no need to even have the cigarette (fake or otherwise), as simply twirling your cigarette holder louchely as you deliver your most melodramatic lines, will ensure you are the heart and soul of the mystery.
4. Pearls
Long strings of cultured pearls were terribly fashionable in the flapper era and fake pearls have to be the cheapest and most widely available accessory of all. You can pick up a fake pearl necklace at virtually any fashion and accessory store on most high streets in America.
